The State of Texas held a public meeting on a proposed plan submitted by Union Pacific Railroad Company to clean up an inactive creosote facility in Houston's Fifth Ward.

It's located at 4910 Liberty Road.

State Sen. Borris Miles (D-Houston) said he's upset about where these facilities are located.

"It just doesn’t make doggone sense that this is happening all over the county in communities of color. It’s not just Houston’s Fifth Ward," Miles said in a post on Twitter

A news report by KHOU stated that Houston's first "cancer cluster" was identified in late 2019, with residents contracting lung, esophageal and larynx cancers.

The plans by Union Pacific Railroad to make changes includes building an underground wall that will keep the cancer-causing creosote in check, the article by KHOU said

KHOU reported that the city is opposing the plan, calling it "inadequate and incomplete."
