Determined to Rise ‘an incredible program' that allows middle school girls to learn about a career in law, leadership

Middle-school girls are invited to explore the options of a career in law at Ms. JD’s Determined to Rise Academy program, to be held June 24 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the University of Houston Law Center.

Determined to Rise is a program designed for middle-school girls in grades 6-8 with an interest in law and leadership. This one-day academy offers a range of engaging activities that are meant to inspire and encourage young girls to consider pursuing a career in law. The itinerary includes a tour of the University of Houston Law Center, informative presentations by notable Houston women attorneys, educational games centered around law and other engaging activities.

The academy will be presented by Ms. JD, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization committed to supporting the success of women lawyers in the early stages of their careers. The organization is run by a volunteer board of directors, which consists of law students and recent graduates, and is assisted by a small team of independent contractors. 

The Determined to Rise program aims to empower young girls by offering them an opportunity to learn and connect with women law students and attorneys. Through this program, girls will learn how they can help others, be a part of the government, start their own business and give back to their community.

“Determined to Rise is an incredible program that brings together middle school girls and local attorneys,” Ms. JD Program Director Katie Day Winchenbach said. “Through educational games and activities, the girls who attend will have the opportunity to see themselves as future members of the legal profession.”

Ms. JD was established in 2006 by a group of female law students from prominent law schools across the country, including Boalt Hall (UC Berkeley), Cornell, Georgetown, Harvard, NYU, Stanford, UCLA, UT Austin, the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia and Yale.
