Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has announced the expansion of the distribution of Naloxone, also known as NARCAN, to law enforcement agencies across the state. This move comes as Texas continues to combat the growing national fentanyl crisis, which has been exacerbated by what Abbott calls President Joe Biden's "reckless open border policies." Abbott stated that fentanyl remains the deadliest drug threat in Texas and the nation, with five Texans losing their lives to the drug every day.

The distribution of NARCAN to law enforcement is part of Governor Abbott's "One Pill Kills" campaign, which aims to address the devastating impact of fentanyl poisonings. The program was initially implemented in April, and this expansion will see a second batch of 60,000 units of NARCAN distributed to police departments across the state. NARCAN is a nasal medication that rapidly reverses opioid poisonings.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) will be responsible for distributing the units of NARCAN. TDEM Chief Nim Kidd expressed the agency's commitment to supporting Texas communities in their fight against the fentanyl crisis. The initial distribution of 20,000 units of NARCAN was made to each of the state's 254 county sheriff's offices, and each agency will be notified of the upcoming distribution.

By expanding the distribution of NARCAN to law enforcement agencies, Governor Abbott aims to ensure that every Texas community, including schools, has access to this life-saving medication. With the growing threat of fentanyl, it is crucial to equip law enforcement with the tools necessary to combat opioid poisonings and save innocent lives from the devastating effects of this dangerous drug.
