Dana Holgerson | University of Houston

The University of Houston (UH) terminated Dana Holgerson as the head coach of the Cougars football team. UH dismissed Holgerson after its first season as a member of the Big XII Conference in which the Cougars finished 4-8 overall and 2-7 in conference play. This decision comes amidst poor performance from the team and an aim to improve their standing within the conference.

The termination has led to new developments regarding Holgerson's replacement. According to the statement, UH has commenced its search for Holgerson’s successor.
"We are committed to finding a leader who shares our vision of excellence in athletics, academics, and community engagement," Pezman said. "We look forward to this new era of University of Houston football."

In connection with Holgerson's departure, there have been financial implications. According to an ESPN report that was run by Houston ABC station KTRK News, UH will pay Holgerson up to $15 million in buyout money, but a mitigation clause may reduce the amount if he’s hired elsewhere.
ESPN reported that UH has shown purported interest in Willie Fritz, of Tulane, and Jeff Traylor, of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
In all, Holgerson leaves the Third Ward with a 31-28 record.

A retrospective glance reveals some highlights during Holgerson's tenure at UH. The website 247Sports reported that 2021 was his best season at UH.
That year, the Cougars amassed a 12-2 record and won the Birmingham Bowl after falling to the University of Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) title game.
