Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Lone Star College (LSC) in Houston is set to receive over $1,329,329 in Skills Development Fund (SDF) grants. These grants have been awarded by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). LSC plans to utilize these funds to provide customized training aimed at upskilling more than 650 employees from four companies: AmeriTex Machine & Fabrication, McCarthy Building Companies Inc., Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital, and Tenaris. The sectors targeted for this upskilling initiative include construction, energy, healthcare, and machining.

According to a recent release, TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel highlighted the importance of the SDF in the state's economy. "It supports market-driven, local prioritization of workforce and business needs," said Daniel. He further emphasized the role of community partners like LSC in offering programs that reskill and upskill employees to fill critical roles in high-demand jobs.

The release also provided some background on the SDF. Established in 1996, this fund aids businesses in upskilling their new or existing workforce. It works in collaboration with public community and technical colleges, workforce development boards, and Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. This collaboration enables the TWC to offer customized and innovative training to Texas businesses irrespective of their size.

LSC's website provides additional context about its history and current operations. Established in 1972 with an initial student body of 615, LSC has grown significantly over time. Today it educates over 80,000 students each semester across eight colleges, eight Workforce Centers of Excellence, five satellite centers, and two University Centers.
