Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo has issued advice to New Year's celebrants who are pet owners, urging them to take into account the well-being of their animals during the festivities ushering in 2024. The county judge's office released a graphic detailing tips on how to ensure animal safety on New Year's Eve.

The office of Hidalgo initially proposed six pieces of advice concerning pet safety, with the primary suggestion being to keep pets company throughout the night. "Bring your pets inside the house before the fireworks start," the office warned. "Create a safe and comfortable space where they can feel secure." Pet owners were also advised to close their windows, curtains, and blinds.

Furthermore, Harris County requested that each pet be identified and microchipped. In case pets manage to escape during the fireworks display, Hidalgo's office said they could be located and reunited with their owners as long as they are microchipped.

While not directly related to pets, Houston FOX affiliate KRIV News reported that authorities are asking residents to use 911 for emergencies only, excluding fireworks-related calls. This measure is intended to ensure that first responders can promptly address any situation that may arise on New Year's Eve. Officials informed KRIV that December 31 is one of the busiest nights of the year for 911 dispatchers.
