UH’s Mielad Ziaee Named 2024 Truman Scholar

Student Mielad Ziaee has been named the 2024 Truman Scholar from the University of Houston, making him just the third recipient of this prestigious scholarship from the institution. Ziaee's dedication to public service and academic excellence has earned him this esteemed recognition.

Ziaee expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunities that come with the Truman Scholarship, stating, “I’m excited to engage with changemakers, stakeholders, and leaders at all levels of public service—to both learn new topics and continue to grow my expertise in others.” He also highlighted his research focus on food insecurity and its importance in addressing public health challenges, saying, “Food insecurity in America is preventable...My work in food insecurity has given me a more holistic perspective on policymaking, healthcare, and wellbeing.”

Reflecting on the support he received during the application process, Ziaee credited the Office of Undergraduate Research and Major Awards for their guidance, stating, “OURMA gave me a space and guidance to reflect on my goals, interests, and trajectory." He also expressed gratitude towards his mentors and family for their unwavering support.

UH President Renu Khator commended Ziaee, saying, “Mielad Ziaee is the very model of student excellence at the University of Houston...He raises the bar for his peers and truly elevates the University of Houston with his professionalism, poise and persistence.”

Ziaee's selection as a Truman Scholar not only recognizes his academic achievements but also highlights his commitment to addressing healthcare disparities and gaps in marginalized communities. Looking ahead, Ziaee expressed his eagerness to work collaboratively towards creating systemic change, stating, “As a Truman Scholar, I can’t wait to collaborate with others to create actionable change at a systemic level.”

The Truman Scholarship, named in honor of late U.S. President Harry S. Truman, has a rich history of supporting emerging leaders in public service. Ziaee now joins a prestigious list of past recipients who have made significant contributions to society.
