Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz Introduces Legislation for Selena Commemorative Coin

Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz introduced legislation Tuesday, April 16th, to honor the legacy of Selena Quintanilla. In a speech on the House floor, De La Cruz expressed, "It is with great honor and profound respect that I introduced this legislation on what would have been Selena’s 53rd birthday." The legislation aims to celebrate Selena's musical achievements and enduring influence as a trailblazer for Hispanic artists.

Through the legislation, a commemorative coin produced by the U.S. Mint will celebrate Selena's extraordinary life and career. The Queen of Tejano music, Selena, was described as an icon who broke barriers and broadened the appeal of Tejano music beyond its traditional boundaries. Her hit songs like "Como La Flor" and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" continue to inspire fans globally.

De La Cruz emphasized, "Let this coin serve as a permanent tribute to Selena’s artistry and her transformative impact on music and culture. We aim to keep her legacy alive for generations to come." The bill, H.R. 8019, co-led by Rep. Michael Cloud and co-sponsored by Reps. Jasmine Crockett and Randy Weber, requires the Secretary of the Treasury to mint commemorative coins in recognition of Selena Quintanilla. The legislation seeks to honor Selena's influence and contributions to music and culture.
