The City of Houston recognized local rapper Megan Thee Stallion on Sunday (May 1) for her philanthropic efforts by issuing a proclamation in her honor and presenting her with a key to the city, Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner led city council members in celebrating the 27-year-old artist, whose real name is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete.

"I was proud to take a moment to celebrate the philanthropic contributions of @theestallion along with her family and many of our council members," Turner said on Twitter. "Her contributions to #Houston have helped a tremendous amount of people and uplifted our city when we needed it the most."

In a subsequent Twitter thread, the mayor said that the Texas Southern University (TSU) graduate helped nursing home workers and residents during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic by donating supplies, money and tablets.

"The tablets helped them stay connected with loved ones who could not go inside the building," Turner tweeted. "I know @theestallion is just getting started and that she will continue to blaze a trail through the good work of her foundation and her music. Our city will forever hold her up as Megan Thee Stallion, Megan Thee Philanthropist and Megan Thee Inspiration."

According to KTRK, "Megan Thee Stallion Day," which is Monday (May 2), coincided with the birthdays of the rapper's grandmother and mother.

Turner said aside from the pandemic, she lent a helping hand in the aftermath of Winter Storm Uri and assisted those grappling with homelessness, per the station.

"I look forward to watching her grow as an artist and humanitarian," the mayor said, KTRK reported.

Megan took to Instagram to express her gratitude toward her hometown, according to a report from Houston NBC affiliate KPRC.

"I will continue to give back to the city that made me who I am today," her post read.

A recipient of three Grammy Awards, Megan is known for songs such as "Hot Girl Summer," "Savage," her duet with fellow Houston star Beyoncé, and "Body."

She recently performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
