A young Houstonian has lent a helping hand to make sure the people in his father's native land Ukraine are taken care of, according to a report from Houston NBC affiliate KPRC.

The station reported that 10-year-old Sebastian Blachno successfully raised over $17,000 to bring medical supplies to the war-torn Eastern European country.

Blachno sprung into action after he and his parents attended a Houston rally in support of Ukraine, per the station.

“I know that lots of people are suffering because of the war in Ukraine," the boy told KPRC. "It is very sad to see little kids suffer in Ukraine, now along with their parents, too."

Blachno added that his heart breaks thinking about the countless number of fathers who bade farewell to their children to defend the country, the station reported.

According to the report, Blachno and his family here and abroad teamed up with nonprofit organization Medical Bridges for the charitable effort.

Blachno told KPRC that he was inspired by his meeting with the Ukrainian Consul General at the rally.

“When I went home, I wanted to help and I asked my parents, ‘How can I help?’" he said, per the station.

KPRC reported that Blachno received help from his school aside from his relatives.

“It was very sweet of [my classmates] to take money from their piggy banks, actually,” the boy told the station.

Blachno said that his peers in Ukraine would be happy to receive toys, but "resources are more important."

“I really wanted to help," he said, per KPRC. "I don’t want the kids to suffer.”

Anyone who wants to help Blachno can donate to a GoFundMe for his cause.
