A tow truck driver’s rescue of a Harris County deputy constable from a flaming patrol vehicle was recognized on Tuesday, according to reports from Houston-based media outlets.

Houston FOX affiliate KRIV reported that Richard Borgstrom received accolades for his actions last month that saved the life of Harris County Precinct 8 Deputy Kiana LeMelle.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) led the recognition rites for Borgstrom, according to the station.

KRIV reported that LeMelle was stationed in the 1300 block of the East Sam Houston Parkway over San Augustine Street in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 26, when a commercial vehicle rearended her squad car and caused it to catch fire.

Borgstrom was in the vicinity when he heard a commotion and went to the accident site to lend a helping hand, the station reported.

According to KRIV, the wrecker operator broke a window and pulled the peace officer to safety.

Precinct 8 Constable Phil Sandlin praised Borgstrom for prioritizing LeMelle’s safety over his own.

"Mr. Borgstrom, who without regard for his own personal safety, did not hesitate to act in a life-threatening situation,” Sandlin said, per KRIV. “His efforts undoubtedly saved Deputy LeMelle’s life, and we are forever grateful for his actions that night."

Houston NBC affiliate KPRC reported that LeMelle and Borgstrom had an emotional reunion at the meeting.

“I’m very grateful for you,” LeMelle told Borgstrom, according to the station. “Thank you. There are no words, but I just said thank you. I can’t thank him enough.”

Borgstrom told KPRC that he doesn’t normally travel on Beltway 8 as part of his job.

“[But] something made me go toward the beltway,” he recounted, the station reported.

According to KPRC, the motorist who struck LeMelle isn’t facing any charges, with the Pasadena Police Department (PPD) attributing the accident to drowsiness at the wheel.
