Gov. Greg Abbott | Office of the Texas Governor

Governor Greg Abbott recently presided over the Texas Capitol Menorah Lighting Ceremony to mark Hanukkah in Austin. The Office of the Texas Governor reported that the ceremony was attended by more than 200 people.

The event took place amid a backdrop of conflict, as Israel is currently engaged in a war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the U.S., and several other nations, launched an unexpected attack on areas near the blockaded Gaza Strip. This attack resulted in more than 1,000 casualties and led Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare a state of war. "This year, these lessons are even more important as the Jewish homeland fights to protect its citizens from the horrors of Hamas," said Abbott in a statement. "During this Hanukkah season, and always, Texas stands with Israel."

According to the governor’s office, Abbott participated in some Hanukkah traditions during the ceremony. He lit the servant candle of the Menorah and distributed gelt, or Hanukkah chocolate coins, to children. Several rabbis and other faith leaders were also present at the ceremony.

As reported by Austin Journal last month, Abbott made his third visit to Israel since taking office in 2015. According to their report, he held meetings with Netanyahu, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and several other officials to discuss ways in which Texas can continue its support for Israel. This visit coincided with the end of the first month since Israel declared war on Hamas.
